Founded at Elton Boarding School, Ogden Boat Race’ early psycho-velvet sound (as found on ‘Coal Tar Carbolic) was a typical recording session fortified by marijuana. All six members of the band played guitar, relying on session musicians for drums and occasional keyboards.
At the time of releasing their sixth album ‘Talk of The Throne’, their sound and subject matter had matured. Members moved to live apart from each other. They announced an end to touring with a final set onboard a chartered Concorde flight from London Heathrow to Tangier.
Finally, the band acrimoniously parted in the 1980s. Former band manager Rex Chill together with occasional session drummer Brian Standedge continue to tour under the name ‘Rex Chill’s Ogden Boat Race’, playing favourites to appreciative audiences across Europe and America.
This image was uncovered recently, originating from a reel of unlabelled 8mm cine film found in the attic of Reverand Sarah Heeley. It is thought to have been shot around 1967 by her father, the Dean of Corpus Crispin College at that time.
